How to study for an exam in two weeks

Short answer: to study for an exam in two weeks, list the whole syllabus on day one, spread the chapters over 10 days starting with the hardest, test yourself every day instead of rereading, and keep the last 3 days for past papers and rest.

1. Day 1: take inventory

List every chapter you need to know and rate your mastery from 1 to 3. Now you know where to spend your time: chapters rated 1 first.

2. Days 2 to 11: one hard chapter + a quick review

Every day:

  • one new chapter (the hardest one left);
  • a quick review of the chapters covered 1, 3 and 7 days earlier: this is spaced repetition, the most effective way to remember for the long term.

3. Test yourself instead of rereading

Rereading makes you feel like you know. Testing forces your brain to retrieve the information, which locks it in. Turn each chapter into 10 questions or flashcards and answer them without looking at your notes.

4. Days 12 to 14: past papers and sleep

Do at least two past papers under real conditions, fix your mistakes, then ease off the day before. Sleep consolidates memory: a full night beats a last reread at 2 a.m.

Summary
